Sour Diesel

Sour Diesel (sometimes referred to as Sour D) is one of the best known and widely available sativa strains on the market today, with 80% of its genetics leaning on the sativa side. Its name was derived from its pungent, sometimes overpowering gasoline-like aroma that is punctuated by sour and skunky notes. It is a very potent strain with THC levels measuring between 20%-25%, with effects that are mainly cerebral. While its true lineage remains a mystery due to a lack of formal records emerging from the underground cannabis world of the 80s and 90s, the most popular theory speculates that Sour Diesel originated from a 3 way cross between Chemdawg, Northern Lights, and Skunk #1.

The resinous buds of Sour Diesel appear rounded and medium-sized, covered by green and yellow leaves with bright red pistils. They are dense and difficult to break apart by hand, but when the buds are opened, not only does the pungent smell intensifies, but the inside reveals a generous coating of trichomes. When smoked, sour Diesel gives off a harsh, irritating smell and taste, often followed up by heavy coughing. Even the exhale is characterized by a sour, ammonia-like taste, which some may like while others find to be unpleasant. If you happen to fall in the latter category, using a vaporizer is recommended to lessen the undesirable taste or flavor.

Sour Diesel produces fast-acting effects, which begin with the onset of pleasant euphoria and the uplifting of mood. Chattiness and sociability may increase if Sour Diesel is consumed among others. However, as it is common with powerful sativa strains, Sour Diesel may also lead to some undesirable side effects. Users with low THC tolerance can feel anxious and paranoid, and even experienced users may come to feel overwhelmed with a big enough dose.

Sour Diesel is a versatile plant and can be cultivated indoors or outdoors provided the climate is appropriate. Requiring temperatures between 72-80 degrees Fahrenheit, Sour Diesel flourishes in a Mediterranean type of climate and can exceed 4 feet in height. It flowers in 10 weeks when grown indoors and yields 1-2 ounces per square foot of the plant.
