Sour Kush is more commonly referred to as Headband, a name that is considered to be one of the most popular cannabis strains in the world. Being a power-packing, 85% indica dominant hybrid with great medical potential and a rich history, it is credited to Colorado breeder Reserva Privada. The “Headband” name was popularly adopted due to users’ reports of a felt pressure around their temples, reminiscent of wearing “a headband.” The sensation was explained as the dilation of facial blood vessels under the effects of the THC, which typically reaches levels well in the mid-20s.

The euphoria brought on by Sour Kush is said to develop slowly, with some users reporting up to a 20 minute delay before the sensation fully kicks in. Characteristic of its genetics, the strain induces a spacey, foggy state which makes focusing difficult and reduces mental acuity. A heavy couchlock with even a light dose is to be expected, but the mind will feel relaxed, boosting one’s receptiveness to new information and the ability to free-associate, thereby birthing creativity. Consumption is recommended in a comfortable environment in the later hours of the day. If and when desirable, the psychedelic sense of disconnection from one’s own body makes Sour Kush a potential aphrodisiac as well. For medical patients, the long-lasting effects of Sour Kush are great for relieving pain, stress, anxiety, or insomnia. For its potency, Sour Kush can also cause some undesirable side-effects, including dizziness, spaciness, dry mouth, and dry eyes, thanks to that very same trademark effect on facial blood vessels from which it gained the name “Headband.”

Appearance wise, Sour Kush has great bag appeal with cone-shaped, nugget-sized buds that are sticky to the touch due to a generous cover of silver and white trichomes. Pale green leaves sometimes come in shades of purple, which can emerge due to temperature fluctuations during the vegetative period of the plant’s growing cycle. The primary phenotype of Sour Kush is the indica-dominant variety that is short, stretched, and is considered to be fast-blossoming with a 63 day flowering period. However, a long, stretched, and slower-blossoming phenotype can also be found, albeit less frequently. Adapt to either inside or outside environments, Sour Kush has an elevated resistance to pests and molds, can withstand a high degree of temperature variation, and yields higher than average crops. For these reasons, it is popular among growers and is usually relatively easy to find locally.

When fully cured, Sour Kush flowers carry a tangy scent, with hints of lemon and an earthy base of pine. When combusted, it yields smooth, citrus flavored smoke that tastes of diesel.
