Purple Thai, also known as Oregon Purple Thai or OPT, was created back in the 70s by a legendary breeder, often referred to as the "Willie Wonka of Pot," named DJ Short. To breed Oregon Purple Thai, DJ Short crossed Highland Oaxacan Gold (aka Mexican Sativa, a landrace strain) and Chocolate Thai. The resulting Purple Thai plant was somewhat unstable, however, the strain had remarkable mood-enhancing and uplifting effects, so OPT served as a building block for DJ Short's subsequent creations.

Purple Thai is 85% sativa-dominant hybrid with THC concentration around 20%, a potency which may very well be excessive for novice smokers. Oregon Purple Thai has a mouthwatering aroma and a nutty flavor, with notes that resemble fresh coffee. The fast-hitting cerebral effects make one's mind race, with thoughts streaming in and out at a million miles a minute. While unfocused, the effects are highly energizing, even motivational for some users. It is a great strain for treating depression or fatigue, but anxiety is a possible side effect.

Purple Thai has big and fluffy buds, forest green in color with thick, lime-green leaves. Fiery orange hairs protrude to provide some accent color. Meanwhile, every millimeter of the plant is blanketed with large, snow-like crystals, providing further evidence to the potency of Purple Thai. The strain is best used during the day, as evening or night-time use may lead to mental overstimulation and interfere with sleep.
